The King’s Cruiser 33

The yacht was built in the 70s on the Abo Batvarf in Turku/Finalnd. Akka is built-number 120 (1975) out of approx. 150 that were built in total.

She is very solidly constructed, typical for those boats that survived from the 70s. The survey done prior to the purchase showed no problems with structural elements and she should prove a valid companion for many more years to come.

She is very roomy for a 33 footer from the 70s! Under deck she has a typical V-berth that can take 2 adults who should be just under the average European height. A small head (stbd) and a cupboard (port) separate the V-berth from the saloon. The saloon offers plenty of space and can sit easily 6+ or sleep 3. A galley offers the basics and a quarter berth (stbd) offers more room for sleeping/stowing. There is standing head room at the galley end of the cabin but that is reduced at the head to a rather uncomfortable bending of the head. All in all she is ideal for two people as she offers plenty of stowage and sleeping room and still provides a spacious saloon that does not feel crowded.

The cockpit is large and offers good shelter, stretching out on her is pure bliss . The deck is very wide and due to the almost flush-deck design and offers very secure footing going forward. There is a stainless-steel railing around the mast that offers additional safety.

She behaves very well with winds from forward but wanders a bit off-course when reaching. Her 29 hp Volvo Penta delivers enough umpph but is a pain in the backside when reversing. The propeller-effect is very strong and one simply can hardly go backwards to port.

What I like:

• Good price/value
• Very solid construction
• Roomy for 2 people

What I don’t like

• The cabin could be just a few centimeters higher to allow standing all the way to the head
• Propeller effect
• Orange fiberglass inside from the 70s 🙂
