Kylmäpihlaja

Another long day to get to my destination. The wind has been coming steadily from south-west since I arrived in Finland, which means that I have to sail clause hauled all the time. A pesky island in my way meant, that I had to tack out to the open sea…

Reposaari

It seems to be the equivalent of Austria’s Linz. I found a lot of heavy industry and a large harbour that is also home to the main Finnish fishing fleet. Reposaari is set-up on a very generous grid-layout with massive space for streets, which gives the town some grandeur.

Wind power

According to Wikipedia, Finland has currently 448 wind turbines in operation. I think I have seen them all by now. The coast-line is scattered with them and today I had to sail between some of them to get to Reposaari/Pori. Every large harbour that I have passed, has parts of…

Kilen

Only a brief trip from Kaskinen to Kilen. The wind has shifted and finally Akka’s bow sees some wind. It was an easy sail and we could lay our harbour-for-the-night. We were the only guests at Kilen and all seems very sleepy around here, despite a wonderful restaurant, that is…

Kaskinen

I only had an hour to walk around Kaskinen, but I loved it. It has an extremely generous layout and the roads and gardens are just massive. Almost every road could be called an “Esplanade”. It is a very leafy place, but also pretty empty. Peter told me that 1.000…

Visiting Eija and Peter

What a wonderful day yesterday was! Eija and Peter picked me up for lunch. Afterwards we drove to their house outside Kaskinen, which is a wooden treasure within some undisturbed countryside. A paradise. We spent the rest of the afternoon chatting away about family, sailing, holidays, retirements and plans for…

A very long day

I left at 5am Ulvön to cross over to Finland. It was grey, raining hardly any wind and the swell from the last few days made progress slow, as I had to start my journey with the help of “good old faithful”. But after an hour some wind emerged and…
