And another little trip for us. We went to Kihnu and Victoria will soon tell you all about it.
Victoria adds: Kihnu is under UNESCO protection because of its unique culture, the most obvious physical manifestation of which is old ladies (and younger ones) in headscarves and indigenous stripy skirts driving around on motorcycles. According to a TV programme I once saw, it is a matriarchal society because then men are all away fishing all the time, so of course I was dead keen to visit. To my disappointment, there were plenty of men around, and none of the women we saw were old ones on motorcycles. But half a day is not really long enough to immerse yourself in the culture, not even a matriarchal one. We couldn’t stay any longer because Felicity and Joshua needed to take the ferry back to Tallinn in time to catch their hideously early flight the following morning, so we will just have to come back next year. The island itself is enchanting – little wooden houses and sandy beaches and forest trails where you can walk or ride bikes, all small enough that you could walk from one end to the other in less than a day. We were very lucky with thee weather, less so with the accommodation (wooden huts at a camp site) which was grimy and severely lacking in the facilities department. If we go again, it’ll be on Akka, so no worries there 🙂
