Midsomar is great! It is such a low-key family-within-the-community event that it is truly heart-warming. I have just come back from the festivities on Gällnö with a smile on my face. There were about 200+ people gathered round the Midsommarstång, joining all in with the singing and dancing. From babies to grannies, all took part in the hour and half long event. I did miss the raising of the Maypole as it was in the morning, so I only managed to join in with the dancing. Now, when the whole show was over, the local coffee shop – was empty! People just dispersed chatting to each other and walked home and that was that. No Austrian-like “any excuse is a good excuse to crack open a bottle”, no British “while we are here we could get a cuppa”, nothing, nada. Truly amazing.
Unfortunately the weather was not joining in the midsomar and it was a bit of a misnomer. On the other hand it was also a truly amazing sight to encounter about 200+ Vikings in foul weather gear around the Midsommarstång.
On their way home, girls and young women are supposed to pick seven different species of flowers and lay them under their pillows. At night their future husbands appear to them in a dream.
I’d suggest they do it in the summer next year – probably even more fun!
