I had the best intentions for Ventspils. Got up, got ready and left. And it looked good to begin with. There was wind as predicted, the fog was not too bad and I was making progress into the right direction. But then things changed. The wind slowed down and came more and more from the east and the fog was turning into a thick soup. It was warm and sunny, but at times the visibility was under 100 meters, maybe even less. When the boat speed dropped to under 1 1/2 kts, I gave up. I didn’t even consider turning the engine on.
My plan B was Slite and this is where I headed for in the fog and initially I made good progress (again). But the wind died down completely and we finally motored into the little harbour. As the fog lifted, I saw that my destination sports a massive cement factory! After 8 hours I clocked up 24 nm! I was aiming for 80 🙂
To compensate for the ugly factory, they have mediterranean beaches on the other side!
