We have arrived at the Åland islands and are currently at the world’s smallest metropolis “Mariehamn”.
The Ålands are an autonomous region of Finalnd where the people speak Swedish – seems like a perfectly reasonable set-up to me.
Apart from this sensible approach, the Ålanders also have a tax-free deal with the EU, which means that thousands of Finns and Swedes travel over here to buy goods tax-free. I guess this accounts for the huge amount of ferries shuttling between these two countries.
The crossing over for Akka and us was bliss as there was sunshine all the way through plus a moderate 4 bft from the “right” direction. So, here we are ready to explore some 7,000 islands.
