The Skipper saves a life

Today we had to make an emergency trip into Stockholm to the ögonsjukhus because I had started seeing flashing white lights in my right eye (no cause for alarm, it turned out to be harmless). While we were waiting, the old lady next to me suddenly slid down in her seat while her eyes turned up in her head and she generally gave the impression of being extremely unwell. With lightning reflexes, I looked over at Wolfgang and whimpered “This lady seems to be having some kind of fit!” With rather more useful lightning reflexes, the Skipper jumped to his feet and lifted her upright, whereupon she was promptly very sjuk indeed, but instead of choking on it, she dribbled it on her rescuer. The other patients shouted for a doctor and the nurses came running over and helped Wolfgang to lay her down on the floor. I think she must have had a heart attack – at all events, she looked entirely dead at this point, but the nurse delivered a few dramatic pumps to the chest, and she came back to life. Wolfgang rolled her over onto her side and she clung to his arm so tightly he’s now covered in scratches, but by the time the ambulance arrived she was well enough to be taken out in a wheelchair rather than a stretcher. It isn’t the first time I’ve been grateful for Wolfgang’s year driving ambulances instead of doing military service, but this time I suspect providence arranged for the flashes in my eyes to happen so that he would be in the right place at the right time.
